What is gynecology?

Gynecology is the area of medical practice focused on addressing a woman’s reproductive health. All women need great gynecology care, beginning from the time they enter puberty — extending through menopause and beyond.

Finding the right gynecology practitioner to partner with can make a world of difference in your health and wellness as you move through the phases of life. It’s important to choose a practitioner who is willing to listen to your concerns and customize your care accordingly.

What happens during a well woman exam?

Well woman exams are the setting where you receive gynecology care. These visits allow your practitioner to provide the screenings needed for your age and overall health. You can also take the opportunity to ask questions or receive guidance on the health topics of greatest interest to you.

The initial part of your visit involves gathering information about your vital signs. You discuss any changes you’ve noticed since your last visit and have a chance to ask questions or express concerns.

A pelvic exam follows. You rest on the exam table or chair with your feet held in gynecology stirrups as your practitioner uses a device called a speculum to gently separate your vaginal walls. This enables a visual examination of your vaginal and cervical tissues.

Pap smear testing is done during pelvic exams. A small sample of cervical cells is gathered for microscopic examination. Pap smear testing is the primary diagnostic tool for cervical cancer, and early detection can greatly increase the chances of successful treatment. If your recent Pap smear tests don't show abnormalities, you may not need annual testing.

What are some topics I can discuss during gynecology visits?

The best way to get the most out of your gynecology care is to be as open and frank as possible with your practitioner. No topic is off-limits, and you’re encouraged to discuss anything you like.

Some of the topics that are often brought up during well woman visits include:

  • Birth control
  • Sexual health
  • Fertility
  • Sexually transmitted disease prevention, screening, and treatment
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Pelvic pain
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Menopause
